Hong-Kong- Overview

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge opens to the public

The world’s longest bridge and tunnel sea-crossing, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, officially opened to the public on Wednesday 24 October 2018. At 55km long, the bridge will shorten the journey time from Hong Kong International Airport to Zhuhai from four hours to 45 minutes and will strengthen Hong Kong’s position as Asia's gateway and a hub for multi-destination travel within the Greater Bay Area.

Spanning the sea from an artificial island near Hong Kong International Airport to Macao and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai, the bridge contains enough steel to build 60 Eiffel Towers and is designed to last 120 years, two decades longer than the lifespan of most major sea-cross bridges.

Hong Kong Tourism Board regional director – Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, Andrew Clark said the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will reinforce Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s gateway. “The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will be a fantastic tool to further enhance the destination’s tourism offering by putting a wealth of diverse cultural attractions, including: the stunning ruins of St. Paul’s in Macao; the Statue of Fisher Girl in Zhuhai; the Kaiping Diaolou; the Seven Star Crags in Zhaoqing, all within easy reach,” Clark said.

Hong-Kong- Overview

New high speed rail connecting Hong Kong to the main cities of China

From 23 September 2018, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail will open, welcoming its first customers and reducing the journey time between Guangzhou and Hong Kong from 100 minutes to approximately 50 minutes – creating quicker accessibility for multi-destination itineraries.

The Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail is approximately 26km and runs along a dedicated underground rail corridor from a new terminus at West Kowloon to the boundary near Lok Ma Chau, where it connects with the Mainland section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail.

The West Kowloon Station will also debut on September 23, and will be the main Hong Kong hub for the new rail network. Once completed, the station will be one of the largest underground high speed rail stations in the world, and features a pedestrian skywalk with views of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline.

Andrew Clark, HKTB regional director – Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, said the new High Speed Rail System will reinforce Hong Kong’s position as the gateway to China.

“We have seen growing interest in China amongst the Australian and New Zealand markets, however accessibility has also been a main area of concern,” he said. “We believe that this rail system will be the missing link to connect Hong Kong to the main cities of China and beyond.

“The Hong Kong Tourism Board is currently working with industry partners to foster and leverage the abundance of tourism resources along the rail line to develop multi-destination itineraries.”
