Hong-Kong- Overview

New high speed rail connecting Hong Kong to the main cities of China

From 23 September 2018, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail will open, welcoming its first customers and reducing the journey time between Guangzhou and Hong Kong from 100 minutes to approximately 50 minutes – creating quicker accessibility for multi-destination itineraries.

The Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail is approximately 26km and runs along a dedicated underground rail corridor from a new terminus at West Kowloon to the boundary near Lok Ma Chau, where it connects with the Mainland section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail.

The West Kowloon Station will also debut on September 23, and will be the main Hong Kong hub for the new rail network. Once completed, the station will be one of the largest underground high speed rail stations in the world, and features a pedestrian skywalk with views of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline.

Andrew Clark, HKTB regional director – Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, said the new High Speed Rail System will reinforce Hong Kong’s position as the gateway to China.

“We have seen growing interest in China amongst the Australian and New Zealand markets, however accessibility has also been a main area of concern,” he said. “We believe that this rail system will be the missing link to connect Hong Kong to the main cities of China and beyond.

“The Hong Kong Tourism Board is currently working with industry partners to foster and leverage the abundance of tourism resources along the rail line to develop multi-destination itineraries.”

Pacific Destinations Fiji

Pacific Destinations Fiji support local communities through tourism

Pacific Destinations Fiji is proud to announce the launch of their new deluxe airport arrival concierge services for pre-booked visitors to Fiji with a traditional iri (hand fan) and masi & vau lei, both hand woven by local women groups through Rise Beyond the Reef and Daku Village respectively.

Managing Director, James Sowane said that it is a proud moment for the company to spread the tourism dollar further to local communities who have committed to producing bulk supplies of their handicraft. “Our hand woven iri and lei will be a unique aspect of our airport welcome experience as it carries an authentic story of supporting local community businesses that are driven by hard working women of Daku Village as well as the various villages that work with Rise Beyond the Reef,” said Sowane.

Sowane added that the new iri and lei service commenced on Friday 1 September 2018 and replaces the floral lei option. “Floral leis have been the traditional choice of the past years, however, it has its own challenges with seasonality of flowers, affecting consistency of standards. These new leis and fans will not wither and can be taken back home by our visitors as a fond reminder of their Fiji holiday experience.”

About Pacific Destinations Fiji:

Pacific Destinations is an 100% Fijian owned and operated destination management company who have been delivering quality tourism land services since 1999. Pacific Destinations owns and operates their own fleet of quality vehicles and also operate tour desk services to three of the large hotels along the Coral Coast. Pacific Destinations service over 65,000 international visitors annually.

Rise Beyond The Reef:

Rise Beyond the Reef bridges the divide between remote communities, government and the private sector in Fiji, sustainably creating a better world for women and children. 50% of Fiji’s communities live rural and remote areas.

Due to lack of transportation, education and market access is challenging and creates barriers to earning income. Through Rise Beyond The Reef’s Traditional Contemporary Arts and Crafts Income Generating Programs, women continue to practice their traditional skills so they are not lost. They learn new skills and in the process Fijian women lead their families and communities as an income earner.

Daku Village:

Daku village is about a 4 hour drive from Nadi or less than an hour’s drive from Suva in Tailevu, near Nausori, on the main Fiji island of Viti Levu.
Modern day development has resulted in the clearing of mangrove areas and as a painful consequence, the surrounding Rewa River is now clogged with sediment and the number of fish has declined dramatically. As the men of the village are no longer able to catch enough fish and shrimp, the women have stepped in and are selling hand-made fans made from palm leaves. The village's 400 residents are making up for the economic loss through the sale of fans.

Mandela Day Celebrated - Giving back to Oz Harvest in Australia

In July 2018, Marissa Fernandez and Sienna Fernandez volunteered alongside South African Tourism to cook meals for those less fortunate with OzHarvest in Sydney.

Under the guide of OzHarvest chefs, and celebrity chef Neil Perry, the volunteers cooked over 350 portions of delicious food, inspired by the flavours of South African cuisine, that were distributed to people in need.

This 'Cooking for a Cause' event was to commemorate what would have been Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday. The message was no matter how small your action, Mandela Day is about changing the world for better, which is something we can all try to live by every day.

South Africa - Capetown

Cape Town has water!

The Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town, has of late been battling a terrible drought which resulted in negative press for the city and the perceived impact this could have on its tourism.

The positive news is that the city of Cape Town and its 4 million residents banded together and various water saving techniques were implemented.

As of August 2018, the dam levels of the Western Cape that feed Cape Town are sitting at 58,9% (up over 103% from the same time in 2017).  This is as a direct result of the local population taking water saving techniques on board, the hotels encouraging their guests to be more water minded, various desalination plants being implemented throughout the region coupled with the recent heavy rain and snow fall. By all accounts the drought’s back has been broken!

Cape Town will continue to implement water saving techniques, as should everyone on the planet, to protect this scarce and valuable resource and, we are sure, will be used as a benchmark for many other international cities moving forward.

Stanley & Livingstone Boutique Hotel Opening November 2018

The essence of the reinvented Stanley & Livingstone is ‘intrinsically historic’. Inspired by a contemporary take on colonial style, its character is classic – with a sense of adventure. While honouring the hotel’s rich heritage, their bold approach to its updated design plays with natural light and quirky features to create spaces that are engaging and inspiring.

Set within the 2 500-hectare (6 200-acre) Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve the hotel is the perfect base from which to explore. Land safaris offer guests a unique experience, with the chance to see all of the Big Five – including the rare and endangered black rhino. Water safaris are operated too, and present an entirely different game-viewing experience of the reserve’s semiaquatic species, including crocodile and hippo.
A glimpse of the hotel:

  • 16 luxury suites each with a private terrace, en-suite shower and bath, air conditioning, minibar, satellite television and telephone
  • A gourmet restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The outdoor terrace enjoys elevated views of the waterhole
  • The bar and lounge area open onto the outdoor dining terrace
  • The fully serviced swimming pool, set within the landscaped gardens, overlooks the waterhole

Gorilla numbers in East Africa are up!

A new census of the gorilla population in East Africa has revealed positive results. The number of mountain gorillas across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to over 1 000. The Virunga Mountains, which straddle the three countries, are home to 604 mountain gorillas. During the last survey in 2010, the Virunga population was at 480. The remainder of the population calls Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park home.

The rise in numbers has been attributed to the introduction of trained park guards, better veterinary care, community support projects and better regulated tourism. The survey also makes special mention of the tireless efforts of the guards and rangers in the area, a number of whom have sacrificed their lives in the name of conservation.

The 6th Annual Hosts Global Forum Exceeds Expectations in Belfast

Hosts Global (Hosts), a strategic partner for destination management services worldwide, hosted over 200 clients and hospitality industry professionals for their sixth annual Hosts Global Forum. This invitation-only event occurred at the Europa Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland from June 21–24, 2018 where attendees participated in on-trend industry discussions, educational sessions, networking events and memorable destination-specific activities.

Hosts’ 2018 conference highlighted the wide variety of hospitable offerings, venues and activities that are available for group programs, meetings and events in Belfast. This year’s event was made possible by platinum sponsors Moloney & Kelly, a Hosts Global member, Tourism Northern Ireland and Hastings Hotels.

Before the event even started, guests checked into the newly built Grand Central Hotel Belfast. Forum attendees were the first to stay in the luxury high rise hotel, as Grand Central opened their doors to Hosts before their official grand opening just for the occasion.

During the welcoming event, all attendees participated in a corporate social responsibility program organised by Moloney & Kelly that contributed to local non-profit organisation, The Wave Trauma Centre. The organisation is a grass roots, cross community, voluntary organisation formed in 1991 to support people bereaved of a spouse as a result of violence in Northern Ireland, and later expanded to incorporate the needs of child, youth and those injured or traumatised through “the Troubles”.

During the conference, Hosts proudly announced the winners of the annual Hosts Honors awards acknowledging DMC members who exceeded expectations in the following categories:

Critic’s Choice Award:
Ultimate Ventures, a Hosts Global Member based in Dallas
Hosts Southern California

DMC of the Year Award:
Moloney & Kelly, a Hosts Global Member

It wouldn’t be a forum for hospitality leaders without showcasing unique events. The opening session took place at Titanic Belfast, where attendees explored the Titanic story from a fresh and insightful perspective in the city where it all began, before stepping back in time for a Titanic era Belfast soiree. The city of Belfast welcomed Hosts Global attendees with open arms proving that they are #IncentiveReady.
